A number of mamas I've worked with have chosen to use Hypnobabies as their childbirth education method and comfort tool during birth. If you aren't familiar with Hypnobabies, you can check out my previous blog here for some more information!
When people learn that I offer doula services specific for Hypnobabies families too, I usually get a quizzical look. Often times, this is because the idea of hypnosis is usually partnered with being completely taken over by the hypnotist and chicken impressions. First, I've never seen a Hypnobabies mama cluck like a chicken, I promise.
Let's unpack some of the common misconceptions about Hypnobabies to help you better understand how this tool can be a wonderful experience for many families.
Myth: Hypnosis Means Sleeping
Fact: You don't have to sleep or even close your eyed using Hypnobabies.
Using hypnosis during childbirth does not mean you'll be sleeping or zoned out through birth, in fact it's the opposite. With Hypnobabies, mamas learn how to use "eyes open hypnosis" to be fully present during their birthing time and enjoy every second.
Mamas learn to use specific tools during hypnosis to be able to guide comforting sensations where they need it most. This allows them to be able to be present, laugh, talk and fully experience the birth of their baby.
Myth: You Can't Move Around
Fact: Hypnbabies allows mamas to move as much as they want.
Once again, by learning "eyes open hypnosis" mamas are able to fully experience their birth, including taking advantage of movement and different positions to guide their baby down for birth. I help my Hypnobabies mamas much like clients who don't use hypnosis, by suggesting the best positions for their baby and to help birth progress.
Many of my Hypnobabies mamas have sought to use water birth during their birthing experience, which is quite the opposite of lying in bed! By combining the benefits of water during birth and their Hypnobabies tools, I've witnessed plenty of gentle and joyful births full of movement and confidence.
Myth: Your Partner Won't Be Involved
Fact: Partners are a vital member of a Hypnobabies birth team.
Partners study the Hypnobabies course along with the mamas, learning how to use prompts to deepen their partner's hypnosis and provide comfort. They also reap benefits of the course by getting rid of the fear they may have surrounding birth.
Partners are also involved in providing counter pressure, ensuring mama drinks water and eats food. Not only that, many of the Hypnobabies partners I've worked with have become so invested in the experience, they chose to take on additional duties like being in the tub with their partner or even catching their baby!
Myth: It Won't Work
Fact: Hypnobabies is designed to work for the mamas who trust the method and train hard.
I've witnessed amazing birth experiences for mamas who've used Hypnobabies. Often, the training increases confidence and reduces stress leading up to birth. It also provides a very tangible goal to focus on while preparing for and during birth.
For the mamas who've chosen Hypnobabies, I believe it's a wonderful tool that allows them to achieve the birth they envision. If you're hypo-curious, I highly recommend researching more about this method for your birth.
